Protect against cryptowall ransomware

What is CryptoWall?

Cybercrooks are at it again (actually, do they ever stop?) with another variant of Ransomware virus. It’s called CryptoWall, and is very similar to the CryptoLocker virus that emerged last year. According to Fortinet Security blog, “this type of malware holds your data hostage by encrypting your files and then charging a ransom to decrypt the files” and unfortunately “there is currently no way to obtain the private key to decrypt the files without paying the ransom.” That means if your files get locked, you either have to pay the ransom, or say goodbye to your files.

Below is a table of the types of files that CryptoWall encrypts:

How to Protect Your Data

CryptoWall is a very malicious virus, but there are ways to protect your system from being infected. We listed our recommendations below:

  1. ESET NOD32 Antivirus: New versions of this malware are released frequently, so it is important that you are receiving regular virus database updates (your ESET product will check for updates every hour) and take precautions to ensure that your computer is not vulnerable to this infection.
  2. Regular System backup with CA ARCserve D2D: This kind of attack indicates the importance of backuping up your files and system settings. If you backup all your files regularly, then you are no longer trapped if such a situation arises.
  3. Regular patch management: Install patches and software updates on a regular basis.
